I linked it to their teacher page and they were able to easily access the page in order to explore. I gave them no structure with it - except to stay in the K-2 range. Some did want to go higher and try some of the activities that were in the 3-5 section so I let them go to this section as long as they had talked to me about it first. I had many of my students practicing their verbs, nouns and adjectives and it was a great time for them to learn. If you use this website in your classroom, you could have all of the students focusing on one activity in order to see where they are at on that particular topic. Overall, I was extremely impressed with this website and all that it had to offer to the students! Lows: If you do not have a way to link it to the students, this could be a difficult site for them to find - that being said I do believe that this is a worth while site to have students on. Overall: If you are looking for something new for your students to try in computer class, I would recommend giving this website a try. I loved it as it was extremely open-ended and allowed my students to try out their navigation skills! It also did provide challenges for students if they wanted to go up to the 3-5 level. I do believe that this did engage students in a meaningful way as I had students participating in games and activities that were testing their knowledge - but they enjoyed it anyways. |
![]() Class Dojo
Class Dojo is a free app/computer program. You input your students names and they will each be assigned a different type of monster. From here you introduce the system to your students, and start! Students can be reinforced for positive behaviour and be asked to change their behaviour by clicking "needs work." You pick what you want to reward or take away for. Class Dojo also allows you to connect with parents (so they see exactly what you give/take points for. There is also the option to connect with parents on the app and create stories of your day for them to see! Highs: I introduced Class Dojo near the end of my practicum - I did not choose to include parents because of the time of practicum that I decided to try it out. Class Dojo works amazingly. If you have a class that easily buys into things, this is an app and system that will likely really work for you. I showed my students their monsters and they were immediately excited. My students love gaining points or rewards so they immediately wanted the positive reinforcement. When you are working off of your computer, there are noises that are made when points are given and taken. They are very distinct, which is a great way to signal students that you are giving/taking points. When students were off task or out of their seats, all I had to do was take one point and when they heard the sound they were immediately back in their seats and working. I really enjoyed that I was able to add WHAT I was rewarding or taking for. There are a few different things that my class needed help or reminders about - so it was great that I could input what I needed too in order to have the point given/taken for the correct behaviour. This system worked fairly well for my students, if you have a class that likes a bit of competition and can handle a individual point system - I would definitely recommend Class Dojo! Lows: Make sure your class can handle this! You are also so responsible for inputing all of the points - this means if you have the parents involved that you need to be consistent and remember to do it everyday, during the day. Overall: I think that Class Dojo would be best used at the beginning of the school year. This is a great system and it did work well for me when I started using it on a Monday. This is a great way to engage the students in their learning as it provides gentle reminders for students to get back on task and follow directions. This would be great to use with parents - but consistency is key! If you are lacking on ideas for classroom management, give Class Dojo a try! |
